Thanks to everyone who came out to the Halloween Costume Contest & Dance Party at Space Gallery SF last weekend! The house was packed with creative costumes (in concept and construction), a healthy number of dance freaks, and a few plain clothes party poopers. Costume or not, I had a blast with all of you. Here are some pics from the evening:

Little Halloweenies,

Nowhere to show off your fantabulous costume on Halloween weekend? Bars full, clubs expensive, living rooms too small, night walkers to mean? I have the answer. HALLOWEEN DANCE PARTY at Space Gallery on Saturday, October 29 so you can be yourself celebrating America's best holiday with your most gruesome of friends.

We have a horrific array of attractions awaiting you including tail-shaking music by the freaky Willy Branlund and mind-numbing projections by the scurrrry Rich Kids. Stomach-turning finger food provided by San Francisco's most terrifying Whiskey Commons.

The main event, our BLOODY HIPSTER COSTUME CONTEST, includes categories for Most Doomed Couple, Deadliest Dapper, Venomous Vixen, Moronic Monster and more. Winners receive prizes from such delicious local vendors as Piper's Shoe Parlor and The Loin (we can't spoil all the surprises, now can we?).

First 50 in the door get a FREE BEER and the rest of you can fight over a list of murky Halloween cocktails.

TICKETS are $10. To purchase tickets contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or call Space Gallery at (415) 377-3325

RSVP on Facebook. COME DANCE.

love Kirsten

My next curatorial endeavor is one to be excited about. Featuring three women artists based out of the Easy Bay (SF Bay Area), Staging Space is a multi-sensory installation of photography, drawings, video projections, miniature sculptures, and life-size constructions. Tracey Snelling, Sasha Petrenko and Kathryn Kenworth are the three fantastic ladies behind it all - each of their works are precious, bold, and highly relevant in the social and cultural spheres. Join us at Y2Y Gallery / Jeff King & Co on May 12, 2011 from 6-8pm to celebrate these stunning works and meet some new friends. Press Release coming soon!

Throwing a good party isn't easy, but it must be done. If we don't create an environment where our friends and peers can show off their talents by hanging art, screening films, modeling clothes or mixing a dj set, then who will? That's why I'm backing Ramblin Worker's upcoming dance party at Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco rumored to be called, Fog and Laser. Ramblin Worker is code for Steve MacDonald, an old buddy who always has something up his sleeve with fantastical embroidered art and free online playlists. Steve always keeps good company so you don't have to worry about who will be lurking behind the fog or illuminated by pink lasers. Come on out!

Press Release:

Fog & Laser’s first ever official kick-off extravaganza will take place on Saturday, April 23rd, 2011 at The Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco, CA.

In a nutshell, the party will be just that: A large club/dance floor + fog machines + lasers + great music (from any genre) to dance to. Host DJs EmDee & RamblinWorker will be behind the decks as your guides to the music portion of this equation. Rather than attempting to go into any great detail in defining the exact types of music that will get played, let’s just say that if we think it will be fun on the dance floor, then it might get played. Our running joke for the ‘FOG’ in Fog & Laser is that it stands for “Free of Genre” and we plan to hold ourselves true to this mantra. As a kitchen sink/anything goes/party jam kind of night, one might hear anything from 60s soul to 80s crowd pleasers. Anything from 90s guilty pleasures to the best electro cuts from 2005. A large emphasis will be placed on emerging indie and electronic music but that’s not to say we’ll hold ourselves back from playing a great forgotten punk tune here or a Smiths b-side there.

With over a decade of DJ experience (Rockbox/Club Lovely/Club Neon/Debaser), Matthew Davis (EmDee) and Steve MacDonald (Ramblinworker) both feel the time is right in San Francisco to have a party like Fog & Laser. Back in 2004, Steve and Matthew were co-founders of a legendary SFbased party known as Club Neon that took place at The Makeout Room. Along with a few others we created a weekly party that literally had no rules except to have fun with friends and play the music we loved. We often featured guest DJs and emerging bands—something we plan to do at Fog & Laser as well when it hopefully finds a home as a monthly reoccuring event.

Did we mention fog machines and lasers?!! Of course this is one of the reasons it was so easy for us to name the event... but we do plan to up the fun even further with special guests, laser backdrop photo portraits, and great drink specials.

Where: Rickshaw Stop Time: 9-2am

Cost: an economical $7

Friends, this month I am curating my first show at Y2Y Gallery (a subset of Jeff King & Co)  in the beloved Inner Richmond. Arguably the greatest part of San Francisco, I have come to know and love this neighborhood over the past year. With that comes a community of artists that are intellectual, talented, dedicated, and worthy of all the glamour and attention awarded to "downtown" art kids. So come out the Inner Rich. to show some love!

oh, and please tweet/fb/reblog/bring friends.

PRESS RELEASE - The Rich. Kids

Neighborhood Films & Photographs

Y2Y Gallery is proud to present The Rich. Kids: Neighborhood Films & Photographs. This exhibition celebrates the hyper-local artist community thriving in the Inner Richmond district of San Francisco with a focus on up-and-coming filmmakers and photographers. Featured artists include Dana Shaw, Nico van den Berg, Carl Sturgess and Joe Lindsay with a special guest appearance by Dutch painter, Paul Hoek. Please join us for the opening reception on Thursday, February 17, 2011 from 6-8pm.

The Rich. Kids calls attention to the fertile creative community that exists within just five blocks of our own gallery space and miles from the inner city’s typically recognized “artist communities.” The Rich. Kids are a group of collaborators, colleagues and friends who came together at the Digital Filmmaking & Video Program at Art Institute San Francisco California and have since built a neighborhood community, ideology, and creative synergy that is all their own.

In his short film series, Nico van den Berg offers an intimate portrait of the Dutch visual artist, Paul Hoek, in the strenuous physical process behind his water and earth paintings. While documenting the mysterious and uncontrollable elements of nature that inform Hoek’s artwork, Nico employs intimate cinematography to show that the process is just as beautiful as the outcome. Paul Hoek is expected at the opening with a few of his own works to share.

Dana Shaw is an artist and filmmaker concerned with harnessing the hand-made crafts of past generations to enhance contemporary art making practices. Shaw presents a short film, “Tribute,” trialing the fusion of digital photography and painted celluloid frames for a colorful, abstract movement that pays homage to mid-century experimental filmmaker, Len Lye.

Filmmaker and photographer, Carl Sturgess, shares a series of un-staged portraits cataloging the moments in which ideas, creativity, knowledge and inspiration are exchanged. Through these candid photographs in the living rooms, kitchens and rooftops of friends, Sturgess highlights the value of his own creative community as an inspiration for his photography and filmmaking.

Joe Lindsay often finds the most inspiration for his photography in the calm of the first and last moments of daylight, where urban landscapes and open fields demonstrate the importance of darkness in natural lighting. Lindsay's photographs showcase San Francisco's many nuances through the lens of his own rural Pennsylvania upbringing, highlighting the quaintness and quiet of this bustling city.

Please join us for the opening reception of The Rich. Kids: Neighborhood Films & Photographs at Y2Y Gallery on Thursday, February 17, 2011 from 6-8pm. This event is free and open to the public.

You've already met the City Dolls crew: designer Becky Jane Harrington, stylist Kelle Schlax, vintage goddess Crystal Arrias, and jewelry doll Sally Lorenz. Now for one of our stunning models, miss Elena Miska. In between graphic design classes at Academy of Art University, this Bay Area beauty might just partake in a Picky Studio Fashion Show, Ray Ban commercial shoot, or put some time into growing her own company, Come Hither. Catch E. Miska live modeling this Friday, November 5 from 8pm-midnight at Space Gallery SF for our one-night fashion gala, City Dolls; it shall be a classy affair.

When it comes to styling for this Friday's fashion night, City Dolls, at Space Gallery SF, Kelle Schlax is the brains of the operation. Ten years experience in the world of hair, makeup, and fashion has given her plenty of time to dream up a clear vision of avante guard, sexy, and edgy all at once. Her tattooed fingers are to hair like a constructivist painter's are to canvas; every snip and twirl are equally measured and intentional. There's no limit to where her imagination will take a haircut, makeup job, photography shoot or fashion event; which is why she's my number one girl to make City Dolls a smashing ball of a night.

You can often find Kelle Scissorhands at her grounding haven, Ginger Rubio Salon, and you can catch her at City Dolls this Friday, November 5, from 8pm-midnight at Space Gallery SF. You don't want to miss what we have in store!

Most people who know City Dolls stylist, Kelle Schlax, are aware of her pronounced wife and partner in crime: Sally Lorenz. I was first introduced to Sally during a fashion photography shoot styled by Kelle, and two years later, the three of us join forces once again for next Friday's fashion event at Space Gallery SF.

Sally's jewelry line, STOLEN, displays unique personality and spunk: she incorporates real acorns, vintage clock faces, bike chains and feathers for a collection that is truly Ess-Eff. Every piece is thoughtfully handmade to pop any ensemble. Join us at City Dolls next Friday, November 5, 2010 from 8pm-midnight to snag one of these gems for yourself!

Reconciling an affinity for the industrial and natural, Brian Enright is a metal worker / designer who skips between his Oakland studio and artist residencies in Alaska. Modifying raw structural materials, Brian uses advanced welding techniques to create custom furniture, jewelry, and sculptures that can be found around Lower Haters and SF Bike Coalition's Winter Auction. You will find several of his pieces supporting live models in four distinct installations at tomorrow night's fashion bazaar, City Dolls. Don't miss our spectacle of art, fashion, and music kicking off at 8pm and going strong till midnight at Space Gallery SF! RSVP on Facebook and see more blog previews here to get in the groove.
